This course is for beginners to develop their understanding of how to create sustainable fashion. Learn how to recycle, design, and sew and generate exciting ideas.

This one-week course provides an understanding of creative sustainable practices led by our in-house design team at JCA. You will learn new skills, access to knowledge on design generation from customisation and you will be taught the key skill of how to use a sewing machine. You will discover the possibilities of design by bringing in one or more pieces of no longer used clothing. We will cut, sew, and recycle discarded garments into fun, sustainable fashion. During the course you will be encouraged to be as creative as you wish. Your final piece will be a customised garment or accessory. You will have use of the domestic sewing machines, over lockers understanding the fundamentals of extending life cycles of products is a conscientious way to engage within the fashion arena. This course will be delivered in English.
Meet the mentorsIn this week-long course, you will be introduced to the equipment, build confidence with the use of hand sewing and safety with machine usage. A full demonstration of the sewing machines, and a tutorial on the use of the JCA customisation station will enable you to create, sketch, create mood boards and then realise an approved design. The create & make JCA mentor will have a scheduled skill-up studio session, where you will focus on a design skill to apply to your piece. You will demonstrate your knowledge within a studio session and on our guided fashion sustainability tour on our doorstep. All the opportunities are within JCA studio space to reimagine your recycled pieces. You will leave with a piece to be proud of, recreated from old to new.
On completion of this skill building, inspiring course, you will have knowledge of hand sewing skills, and use of a domestic machine. Understanding the importance of the lifecycle of a garment. Why create & make can mean customisation and imagination. Discovery of self-expression through Mood-board making and realisation and reality of creating a fashion piece. (Garment or accessory) The opportunity to ask questions, develop textiles knowledge within a creative, couture community.

We like to celebrate our achievements at JCA. On completion of the course if you have attended 80% of the classes you will qualify for your certificate in dedication to learning.
