Integrated Foundation Year 

The Integrated Foundation Year forms the first stage of this four-year degree, supporting your creative, academic, and professional development before progressing to Level 4.

By enrolling at the Foundation level, you are committing to four years of study, progressing seamlessly from Level 3 through to Level 6.

Sustainable fashion management, live industry brief, merchandising, and career planning. 



Degree Year 3 (Level 6): 
Major Project proposal, production, evaluation, portfolio and graduate futures.

What You’ll Study

The course is structured to help you build knowledge progressively, moving from core principles to applied strategy and independent leadership. 



Level 3 (Foundation Year): Direction

The Foundation Year helps you build creative confidence, academic skills, and a clear sense of direction before progressing to undergraduate study.

You’ll explore how creative practice responds to identity, culture, systems, and change through interdisciplinary projects that develop your visual, research, and problem-solving skills.

Across the year, you’ll:


  • Work across visual, digital, and creative media
  • Develop research, storytelling, and communication skills
  • Build confidence in project planning and presentation
  • Create a digital portfolio demonstrating your ideas and development
  • Complete a Final Major Project aligned with the BSc (Hons) Fashion Management and Strategy degree pathway.


By the end of Level 3, you’ll have the skills, knowledge, and portfolio needed to progress confidently into Level 4.



Level 4 (Year 1): Foundations of fashion management  

In your first year, you’ll develop a strong grounding in fashion business fundamentals, including: 



  • The global fashion system 
  • Consumer behaviour and insight 
  • Business finance and data literacy 
  • Social media marketing and management 

You’ll be encouraged to critically question industry practices from the outset, tackling challenges such as fair pricing, transparency, equality, and ethical value chains. 


Level 5 (Year 2): Application and innovation  

Year 2 focuses on applying your knowledge to real-world fashion management challenges. 

You’ll explore: 

  • Sustainable fashion management 
  • Supply chains, merchandising, and range planning 
  • Commercial decision-making through live industry briefs 

You’ll also be supported in developing a career plan, helping you map your pathway beyond graduation whether into employment, entrepreneurship, or postgraduate study. 


Optional Placement Year  

Between Levels 5 and 6, you can choose to spend a year in industry, further strengthening your experience and employability before returning for your final year. 


Level 6 (Year 3): Strategic leadership and realisation  

Your final year focuses on independent, strategic thinking. 

You’ll undertake a self-initiated major project, which may be: 

  • Based on a live industry brief 
  • A hypothetical business or strategy project 
  • Preparation for launching your own fashion business 

With structured support, you’ll develop a research-informed project that demonstrates your ability to apply management theory to real-world fashion contexts. 


Careers and graduate futures

Entry Requirements

JCA welcomes applications from all different educational profiles and experiences as talented creatives can develop in many environments. Applicants interested in this course are encouraged to engage with the JCA community through an informal interview or a ‘taster day’ event.


Applicants with completed Level 3 qualifications:

Applicants should have the equivalent of 32 UCAS points.


Mature Applicants/‘Non-Academic Route’/Applicants without completed Level 3 qualifications:

Applicants with non-traditional profiles and backgrounds can still be considered for admission to the course as aptitude may be demonstrated through other means. Applicants in this category would normally need to demonstrate a minimum of 2 years post GCSE (level 2 equivalent) professional/work experience and have met with an interviewing tutor. To be considered for admission in this stream, applicants may be asked to provide:


  • In-person participation in practical activities at an on-campus taster day event
  • verbal or written account of their previous experience, study or career goals
  • a genuine commitment to and motivation for further study in this subject
  • a more detailed written or verbal rationale for career or professional development and progression within this sector
